Ziatek Power Takeoff is aptly described as “Ziatek Crystal on steroids!” It offers all of the capabilities of Ziatek Crystal, but multiplies that power by orders of magnitude. It offers powerful takeoff capability from paper drawings with a digitizing tablet, and seamless linking to estimate pricing programs such as Microsoft Excel, with the finesse of the more basic program (Ziatek Crystal.)

Color-coded takeoffs is the basis of the “layers” in Ziatek Power Takeoff where it really departs from the limitations of a fundamental takeoff program. Each of the 100 layers can have its own set of 17 parameters such as color, line weight, area shading style, scale, units of measure, elevation, height (or depth, or thickness), etc. This tremendous flexibility can be applied to multiple phases of a single trade such as a concrete takeoff that involves footings, stem walls, structural slab, sidewalks, etc., or the color coding by layers can be applied to a combination of trades that are involved in a single construction project. An example of this would be a layer for carpet takeoffs, another for drywall quantities, and a third for roofing material takeoff, and so on.

The power of layers is amplified by the use of a feature called “groups” whose design is to filter out a limited set of layers. Groups can comprise any number of layers from one through all 100. Any layer can belong to multiple groups. At any point in time, up to 10 different groups can exist, and any one of those groups can be selected as the active group, and any group can be selected on the fly. Only those layers that are assigned to the active group are visible. The quantities for those layers are summed into a set of group quantities. The group’s units of measure are defined by those assigned to the first layer in that group. That way, the flexibility of each layer having its own set of units of measure is maintained.

Although the principle use of Ziatek Power Takeoff is digitizer takeoff from paper drawings, it does not have to be abandoned when a scale drawing is not available. An embedded drawing tool called Ziatek CADapult! can be used to create drawing images from the likes of field measurements, and will generate the associated takeoff quantities of areas, lengths, and perimeters. Unlike traditional CAD programs that can take weeks of training to gain proficiency, Ziatek CADapult! can be learned in minutes! That implies that it is limited in capabilities compared to a typical CAD program, but its purpose is still just to permit fast and accurate takeoffs. It excels at meeting that need! By implementing the 3D capabilities of the main program, user-generated drawings can also provide vertical surface areas and volumes … in whatever units of measure the user desires.

The digitizer’s input device (stylus or cursor) can have custom functions assigned to its buttons. There are two sets of functions available for assignment to those buttons. The main functions are invoked when buttons on the input device are pressed while Ziatek Power Takeoff is in the foreground. When it is in the background and another application is in the foreground, then the auxiliary functions are invoked by button press. So, 16 Ziatek Power Takeoff functions can be assigned to a 16-button cursor, while just as many auxiliary functions can be assigned to the same set of buttons for use in another program such as Microsoft Excel.
